Homeless Housing

Newham is changing its approach to homelessness

Following a transformation of the Homelessness Prevention and Advice Service, we have created a number of new and exciting posts, all targeted at achieving our overall objective of preventing homelessness.

If you’re someone who:

  • is passionate about preventing homelessness
  • strives to put the resident at the heart of the service; and
  • understands how to offer housing solutions to a diverse community

Then we’d like to hear from you!

Local context

Newham has one of the largest private rented sectors in the UK. It is both the biggest cause of homelessness in the Borough and best way to prevent it. With the only boroughwide private sector licensing scheme in the country, we’re in an excellent position to achieve this.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit us particularly hard. Household income was already £10,000 below the London average prior to COVID-19. But with the highest number of furloughed jobs in London, and the proportion of Universal Credit claims being 2/3rds greater, it’s a challenge that will be with us long after restrictions are lifted.

We have a vibrant and engaged voluntary sector, serving some of the most diverse communities in Europe. Building on these relationships, and ensuring that messages and expectations are realistic from the outset will be critical.

  • Team Leader

  • Housing Adviser

    £32,418 – £34,209

Our Housing Advisers need to have technical understanding of Part VII homeless applications as they will need to be issuing the full range of s188 decisions. But this must be balanced with the ability to have honest conversations with people so that they are empowered to make their own decisions based on realistic outcomes.

  • Private Rented Solution Officer

  • Tenancy Sustainment Officer

  • Specialist Pathway Coordinator

    £34,881 – £37,722

We recognise housing solutions are not the same for everyone. So, to meet the needs of our more complex residents, Specialist Pathway Coordinators will work closely with strategic partners to develop tailored pathways to housing and support.

A Specialist Homeless Projects Officer will lead on projects where developing a new supply of social housing requires some dedicated knowledge around homelessness and alternative housing options.
